Since I now have this fancy new camera, I need to learn how to use it ! In my case, the best way to do this is to start taking pictures and see what works. The clouds looked quite nice this evening which gave me a good opportunity to play.

The auto focus system on the new SL3 is far superior to that of my old SX40HS. This is to be expected given not only the jump in capability, (point-and-shoot to DSLR), but also the amount of time, (2011 vs 2019).

My SX40HS takes great pictures, no doubt. But the advantages of a new DSLR become evident in terms of picture clarity thanks to the SL3's much larger APS-C sensor.

The auto focusing system and in-camera image processing are light years ahead of what I'm used to.

One of the more significant weaknesses of my old Canon SX40HS point-and-shoot camera was its performance in low light, or rather the lack thereof. This is a common issue for long zoom small sensor cameras, especially in 2011 when it was new. The new Canon SL3 has a much larger sensor, and therefore, performs much better in low light.
