April 6: Hornets Nest Region AACA show . . .
Read MoreI mentioned earlier that during the late 1920s and early 1930s, Chevrolet used a different name for its product lines each year. The 1927 model line was known as the "Series AA Capitol." That was replaced by the "Series AB National" for 1928, which was followed by the "Series AE International" in 1929. The "Series AD Universal" for 1930 was followed by the cars seen in the photo above, the "Series AE Independence," in 1931.
For the record, the 1932 model line was known as the "Series BA Confederate." Then beginning in 1933, Chevrolet offered more than one model line and used a different name for each, (the entry-level Mercury and upper-level Eagle).Erskine's initial sales seemed promising with almost 25,000 cars sold in its inaugural year of 1927. Then two problems made themselves known. In 1928, Ford introduced its Model A which cost nearly half as much ($525 for the Ford, $995 for the Erskine). Then in 1929, the Great Depression finished off what remained. Erskine's products were absorbed into Studebaker in 1930.
Brothers Horace and John Dodge began building bicycles in Detroit in 1897. By the turn of the 20th century, the brothers had opened their own machine shop and began supplying parts for the automobile industry. Initially, they built transmissions for Oldsmobile. But by 1903 they had become a very successful supplier for Ford. At one point, John Dodge became vice president of Ford Motor Company. But in 1914, the Dodge Brothers left Ford and began building vehicles under their own name. Dodge Brothers became part of the Chrysler Corporation in 1928.
The Lincoln Zephyr arrived for the 1936 Model year as Lincoln's entry-level line. The Zephyr's price point was placed in between Ford's most expensive offering, (the Model 68 Deluxe), and the very exclusive and expensive Lincoln Model K. The car was a hit and lifted Lincoln sales figures above those of Cadillac that year, (something that didn't happen very often). Total Zephyr production for 1938 was 19,111 cars.
Power comes from Lincoln's 267 CID V12 that makes 110 hp. The Zephyr V12 engine, (which was completely different from the Model K V12), was exclusive to this class of car, (LaSalle used a V8, and Chrysler and Packard used an inline-8). Unfortunately, it also developed a reputation for being problematic.
