Read MoreBill Elliott won 6 races during the 1987 season including the Daytona 500. Also of note is the fact that Elliott set the qualifying speed record twice that season. The first time was at Daytona where he qualified at more than 210 mph. He broke his own record later that year at Talladega when he topped 212 mph.
The Talladega record is unlikely to be broken due to an accident on lap 22 of the race where Bobby Allison went airborne down the front stretch. Thanks to the safety fencing in place, his car stayed away from the crowd in the grandstands. Even so, NASCAR began mandating the use of restrictor plates specifically to get a handle on top speeds.Yunick the began building the car seen in the photos above and below during the winter of 1967, with the goal being to have it ready for the Daytona 500 in February 1968. This car was built using Yunick's well documented "full interpretation" of the NASCAR rulebook. When he arrived at Daytona, his car wouldn't pass inspection due to its completely custom frame.
The inaugural season of the International Race of Champions (IROC) featured four races on the schedule from October 1973 - February 1974. For that first season, the drivers competed using identically prepared Porsche Carrera RSRs. After the season was over, the Porsches were found to be too expensive. For the second IROC season, the Chevrolet Camaro was chosen to be the series' ride.
