  • The beach is extremely wide at the southern end of the island at low tide. I'm not completely sure of the science behind it. But it involves natural ocean currents eroding sand from the northern end of the island and depositing it at the southern end. At low tide, several small "ponds" appear where sand has been deposited unevenly.

  • The Mary Anne was a "push" style shrimp boat, meaning the pilot house is at the rear and the mast seen in the photo above is in the center.

  • Sometime in 1996 after a day of shrimping, the Mary Ann anchored here for the night. Low tide arrived and the ship became grounded and began to list to one side. When the tide came back in, it flooded the Mary Ann causing it to sink.

  • For years, the shipwreck was actually in the water. But the process I mentioned earlier of ocean currents eroding sand from the northern end of the island and depositing it at the southern end means the beach has become bigger and completely engulfed the area of the wreck. The entire boat is now buried in about 20 feet of sand.

  • After 22 years, the tall mast is the only part of the boat still visible.

  • Now that I finally got a clear picture, I can see a sign on the ship that says "Island Merchant." The other visible logo says "Stevens Towing Company, Yonges Island, SC."

  • Stevens Towing Co. is a century-old shipping and towing company based in South Carolina. The "Island Merchant" is one of the company's tugs.

  • At low tide, curious visitors like myself are able to walk (or pedal) out into the ocean on top of a sandbar.

Welcome to Sunday morning on Jekyll Island.

  • After breakfast, I headed to the island with the same plan as I had yesterday which was to continue exploring the island on two wheels. I parked in the same parking lot, unloaded the bike, and headed to the Beach Village. The lawn seen in the photo above is known as the Village Green and is the site of many Beach Village activities like yesterday's live music concert. But all was quiet on this Sunday morning.

  • It looked like I would have to keep an eye on Mother Nature. "Scattered storms" were in the forecast for the entire day. Skies were rather ominous looking to the north.

  • Skies didn't look much better to the south. The good news was that all was clear directly overhead. I started pedaling and hoped for the best.

  • I headed north along the Ocean View Trail until I reached the pavilion at Great Dunes Park. The Shell Road Trail begins here and heads west toward the Historic District through the center of the island. I spotted a few tourists along the way
