September 2: Exploring the southern half of the island . . .
Read MoreAfter breakfast, I headed to the island with the same plan as I had yesterday which was to continue exploring the island on two wheels. I parked in the same parking lot, unloaded the bike, and headed to the Beach Village. The lawn seen in the photo above is known as the Village Green and is the site of many Beach Village activities like yesterday's live music concert. But all was quiet on this Sunday morning.
The properties on this side of the island look similar to those I saw yesterday near the beach. The modest homes sit on lots that are larger than you would expect. But even though this neighborhood is not on the beach, the price of admission is still what you would expect for any location that features the word "Island."
Several trails meet at the intersection of Riverview Drive and Captain Wylly Road just south of the airport. This is where the North Loop Trail ends and the Historic District Trail begins. Also at this point is where the trail seen in the photo above begins. The east-west Glimpses of Golf Courses Trail parallels Captain Wylly Road through the center of the island and offers views of Great Dunes Golf Course to the south and the Jekyll Island Golf Club to the north. I stopped at a wooden bridge at Old Plantation Road to take a few pics.
Once I reached Old Plantation Road again, I decided to head south to check out the trails on the southern end of the island. Following Old Plantation Road south took me to the Stable Road bypass around the Historic District. I noticed something off of Stable Road that I don't remember seeing before.
Like it northern counterpart, the South Loop Trail makes a loop around the southern half of the island. The trail alternates from meandering through the woods to running next to the roadway. The first section of wooded scenery was followed by a short stint parallel to Riverview Drive. The photos above and below look west.
