  • Welcome to Sunday morning on Jekyll Island.

Welcome to Sunday morning on Jekyll Island.

  • It looked like I would have to keep an eye on Mother Nature. "Scattered storms" were in the forecast for the entire day. Skies were rather ominous looking to the north.

  • Skies didn't look much better to the south. The good news was that all was clear directly overhead. I started pedaling and hoped for the best.

  • After breakfast, I headed to the island with the same plan as I had yesterday which was to continue exploring the island on two wheels. I parked in the same parking lot, unloaded the bike, and headed to the Beach Village. The lawn seen in the photo above is known as the Village Green and is the site of many Beach Village activities like yesterday's live music concert. But all was quiet on this Sunday morning.

  • I headed north along the Ocean View Trail until I reached the pavilion at Great Dunes Park. The Shell Road Trail begins here and heads west toward the Historic District through the center of the island. I spotted a few tourists along the way

  • My guess is that the Shell Road Trail is so named because it sits next to and parallels Shell Road at the southern end of the Great Dunes Golf Course.

  • I rode through the Historic District before exiting on Old Plantation Road which passes through the district in a north-south direction. Once out of the district, Old Plantation Road passes through a residential neighborhood to the north.

  • The properties on this side of the island look similar to those I saw yesterday near the beach. The modest homes sit on lots that are larger than you would expect. But even though this neighborhood is not on the beach, the price of admission is still what you would expect for any location that features the word "Island."

  • My favorite aspect is that during all of my trips to the island, I have never felt "crowded" anywhere.

  • I followed Old Plantation Road for a while before heading back to the Historic District Trail on the western side of the island. This giant Live Oak tree at the airport caught my attention.

  • Several small private planes were tied down at the airport. I'm not sure if this individual had just arrived or was preparing to leave.

  • Several trails meet at the intersection of Riverview Drive and Captain Wylly Road just south of the airport. This is where the North Loop Trail ends and the Historic District Trail begins. Also at this point is where the trail seen in the photo above begins. The east-west Glimpses of Golf Courses Trail parallels Captain Wylly Road through the center of the island and offers views of Great Dunes Golf Course to the south and the Jekyll Island Golf Club to the north. I stopped at a wooden bridge at Old Plantation Road to take a few pics.

  • Once I reached Old Plantation Road again, I decided to head south to check out the trails on the southern end of the island. Following Old Plantation Road south took me to the Stable Road bypass around the Historic District. I noticed something off of Stable Road that I don't remember seeing before.

  • I didn't realize it at the time, but this road also leads to one of the entrances to the abandoned amphitheater. If I had known that, I would have stopped to check out one of the more famous sites on the island. But since I was clueless, that would have to wait until tomorrow morning.

  • I continued heading south along Stable Road until I reach the entrance to the Crane Road Trail. Just like the nearby Shell Road Trail which is so named due to its proximity to Shell Road, the Crane Road trail eventually leads to Crane Road which is now abandoned and used only as a trail.

  • Like it northern counterpart, the South Loop Trail makes a loop around the southern half of the island. The trail alternates from meandering through the woods to running next to the roadway. The first section of wooded scenery was followed by a short stint parallel to Riverview Drive. The photos above and below look west.

  • The South Loop Trail diverted back into the woods near the Tidelands Nature Center and Rixen Pond. I encountered another long wooden bridge where the trail crosses over the marsh.
