I headed into Brunswick for some lunch and also to check out Sidney Lanier Park. My guess was that the ship I spotted yesterday, the K-Line "Horizon Highway," was headed inland to the Colonel's Island Terminal. Lanier Park offers a great, if distant view of the terminal, but only if Mother Nature Cooperates.

Naturally, as soon as I parked at Lanier Park and started to get out of the car, the skies opened up again.

This downpour passed quickly. Once the rain stopped, I headed to the old bridge which now serves as a fishing (and cargo ship viewing) platform. The signage at the platform describes the history of the bridge and its construction.

The first thing I noticed was a floating crane anchored next to the old bridge.

"Clyde" seemed to be enjoying his day off.

Actually, I believe "Clyde" is the crane manufacturer.

Liberty Harbor was supposed to be a waterfront housing development with homes, shops, and a hotel.

The old Lanier Bridge across the Brunswick River was a "vertical lift" design and was opened in 1956. When the new bridge opened in 2003, this section of the northern side of the bridge was left in place and now serves as a fishing and wildlife (and cargo ship) viewing platform.

Next to Lanier Park is the stalled Liberty Harbor development.

Mother Nature threw some fog at me which made picture taking difficult. But I can see the outline of at least one cargo ship through the fog. The storms I've encountered to this point have all been fast-movers. So maybe the fog will clear if I hang around for a few minutes.

Speaking of the Georgia DNR facility, the old bridge offers a great view of the facility that sits directly east.

My plan worked ! The fog lifted after a few minutes to give me a great view of the Colonel's Island Terminal. And I now see that there are three ships docked, all of which are vehicle carriers.

First in line is the K-Line "Horizon Highway."

Next in line is the "Eternal Ace."

The third ship is the Wallenius Wilhelmsen "Titus."

Wallenius Wilhelmsen is a Scandinavian shipping company.

The Eternal Ace belongs to Japanese shipping company MOL, (Mitsui O.S.K. Lines).

Turning the other direction, I spotted a small dock to the southwest.

I'm not sure what this dock is used for. It appears to be attached to a small wooded area in the marsh. There is a Georgia DNR office next door. So maybe it belongs to them.

The name "Stevens Towing Co." is the same name that was on the side of the Island Merchant ship I saw last night.

Construction of the new Sidney Lanier Bridge began in 2000 and was completed in 2003.

The new bridge features 185 feet of clearance below the bridge deck and can accommodate large cargo ships.

I guess this is another "scattered" storm off in the distance.

Directly across from the old bridge to the south is the dock for the Emerald Princess Casino ship.

Before heading back to Jekyll Island, the weather improved which allowed me to get a few more good pics once the sun came out again. The first ship is the "Horizon Highway."

The second ship is the "Eternal Ace."

The third ship is the "Titus."

The name "Liberty" is a reference to the Liberty Ships built here, (the old Brunswick Shipyards), during WWII.

Funding dried up during the economic crisis and the project was abandoned.

I'm not sure what the white flag means. I don't see this crane heading into the final lap of a race. Nor do I see this crane surrendering to anyone.
