  • The Jekyll Island Museum serves as the history center of the island and its inhabitants. The word "museum" normally conjures an image of a Smithsonian-like place where stories are told through a large number of detailed exhibits. But in this case, those "detailed exhibits" are the places within the Historic District, itself. The best way to describe the history of the island and the club era is to actually get visitors up close and personal on a tour through the district. In other words, the bulk of the museum's role involves being out of the museum building and among the actual landmarks described therein. I walked extensively through the Historic District during my last visit which. I stopped today specifically to go through the museum building itself.

  • The museum is located in the former Jekyll Island Club Stables along the aptly named Stable Road, which is essentially a bypass for vehicle traffic around the Historic District. The stable heritage becomes evident once inside the building.

  • The museum serves as an introduction to the island and its history. There are several artifacts and informative displays scattered throughout. Above is a really good summary of islands's pre-club timeline.

  • Above is a model of the island from the club era. The club stables, (now the museum), would be at the top of the photo just to the right of center.
