December 25: Christmas lights in the Historic District . . .

  • On the agenda for this evening was a trip back to the Historic District to check out the Christmas lights. The Jekyll Island Club Hotel does Christmas very well and successfully tempted me to try once again to take pictures in the dark. Coming from the hotel's parking lot meant I first passed by the Palm Court, the hotel's center courtyard.

  • Several large green spaces sit in front of the hotel. The massive Southern Live Oak trees that border these spaces were all decorated for the Season. In addition, a giant Christmas tree had been set up in the center of the front lawn. My plan was to start at the corner of the hotel on Riverview Drive and make a clockwise circle around the lawn, which would take me past the front of the hotel, the front of the Sans Souci guest wing, and Indian Mound Cottage before returning to Riverview Drive. The photo above is of the giant tree at the intersection of Riverview Drive and Pier Road next to the wharf looking toward the Club Hotel.

  • Most of the Live Oak trees I saw were decorated in this same manner. I can only imagine how many extension cords were needed to make this happen ! I continued turning left which brought a few more decorated trees into view. The white building seen in the photos above and below sits directly in front of the wharf.

  • The branches of Southern Live Oak trees can grow to incredible lengths. With length comes immense weight which causes branches to sag and contact the ground.

  • Contacting the ground doesn't stop the branches from growing as seen in the photos above and below. These branches also add stability to the tree.

  • I loved the fact that all of the long branches were decorated ! Someone put an incredible amount of work into decorating that tree.
