December 15, 2012: Christmas lights in downtown Athens, Georgia . . .
Read MoreI don't normally spend a whole lot of time in downtown Athens, Georgia, only because of the crowds. The University of Georgia campus is, literally, right across the street from what is considered "downtown." Crowds are pretty decent in size most of the time, and downright unbelievable on the weekends.
But right now, all the little varmints are home for the holiday season. Seeing an opportunity, my friend Heather and I decided to do something different and enjoy a nice dinner downtown. We decided to take a short stroll around the city center and check out the holiday decorations since we were there. Our stroll began by the historic Georgia Theatre which sits at the intersection of Clayton and Lumpkin Streets seen in the photos above and below. The Georgia Theatre has operated in various capacities during its 124 year existence. Today, it is primarily known as a concert venue famous for hosting acts like the B-52s, REM, and Widespread Panic. On June 19, 2009, fire gutted the building. It reopened after a 2 year restoration in 2011, and continues to host a variety of concerts. Willie Nelson is scheduled for January 30, 2013.
