  • So far, so good for the cactus-in-a-coffee-container. Even though it may be more broken than when I started this process, it's still alive.

  • I appear to have two types of flowering grass in the yard - white and purple. What I know as "Monkey" grass is blooming in purple. I have no idea of what the difference is between the two colors, other than the obvious. Truth be told, I don't even know the correct names for either color.

  • Today, I decided to experiment with moving the Gladioli. Their current location next to the dogwood tree, while adequate in size, doesn't seem to be ideal. Each year, the gladioli develop a pronounced lean forward which makes me wonder if they are sitting too much in the shadow of the dogwood and are leaning toward the sunlight.

  • The area in between the Silver European Fan Palm tree and the Star Magnolia is currently occupied by a couple of mostly dead rose bushes, a broken dogwood tree that was transplanted from the backyard, and an even more broken red maple tree also from the backyard.

  • One rose bush was completely dead and came out easily. The other rose bush still had a few small green branches on it. I broke off all of the dead parts and left the green in place. Who knows, maybe something will happen.

  • A layer of black mulch finished this part of the project. Next summer, I'll get to see if this was a good idea.

  • I still have a few Gladioli and a bunch of mystery bulbs left over in the original spot. Since there is room, I'll move these plants a few feet to the left later on. That may get them far enough away from the dogwood tree to be beneficial.
