• On the agenda for today was to do some mowing in the backyard. I've tried to do things with the backyard ever since I moved to Athens in 2009 with little success which I'm guessing is due to all of the shade. But if all I have to do with it is mow it a couple of times per year, I'm fine with that.
Not all is lost, however. The Japanese Boxwood bushes I planted in 2012 have thrived and look great.

 • The photo above shows why I have nothing but shade in the backyard. I believe this is some kind of oak tree. Whatever it is, it's beautiful !

 • Previous owners planted some kind of ornamental grass on the left side of the yard. The small green tree in front of the pine tree is a volunteer of some kind. It's been growing steadily. So I leave it in place.
The tree on the far right of the photo is another flowering dogwood that I bought on sale a few years ago. The tag on the tree said it should be planted in "Part Shade." Apparently, I have more "Shade" than "Part" which has resulted in very slow growth and no flowers. I should probably move it out front.

 • The line where the ornamental grass stops is pretty clear.

 • The right side of the yard is completely shaded all the time which explains why nothing I've planted here will grow.
