April 21: Some maintenance in the backyard . . .
Read MoreOn the agenda for today was to do some mowing in the backyard. I've tried to do things with the backyard ever since I moved to Athens in 2009 with little success which I'm guessing is due to all of the shade. But if all I have to do with it is mow it a couple of times per year, I'm fine with that.
Not all is lost, however. The Japanese Boxwood bushes I planted in 2012 have thrived and look great.Previous owners planted some kind of ornamental grass on the left side of the yard. The small green tree in front of the pine tree is a volunteer of some kind. It's been growing steadily. So I leave it in place.
The tree on the far right of the photo is another flowering dogwood that I bought on sale a few years ago. The tag on the tree said it should be planted in "Part Shade." Apparently, I have more "Shade" than "Part" which has resulted in very slow growth and no flowers. I should probably move it out front.
