  • The small rose bush in front of the house continues to do very well.

  • I've lived in this house for four years as of this writing, and have chronicled my adventures in the yard since the beginning. Each season begins with the disclaimer stating that I'm not really sure what I'm doing in this environment, and that most of what I do is a complete guess along the lines of, "I wonder if this will work." The results, both good and not-so-good, chronicled herein. To this point, things have gone my way.<br />

Recently, I recognized my first "oops." The two Leyland Cypress shrubs seen in the photo above arrived in March 2012, and were part of the first round of new residents in the yard. I was happy to have some new greenery at my front porch, but noted that I'll have to keep an eye on them because they can get quite large. <br />

Fast forward 15 months where both shrubs have more than doubled in size. The significant rate of growth made me revisit the tags that came with the plants. What I had in my mind as a ten-foot "size," which I thought I could work with, was actually the recommended "spacing." The correct "size" specification given was more than 50 feet tall, and 15 feet wide. This would, essentially, render my front door useless. Unless I move them now, I'm going to have a big problem in the future.

  • I decided to relocate them out into the yard. One will go in an area behind the camellia cluster seen in the photo above.

  • The space seen in the photo above will be big enough to accommodate a large shrub, and not interfere with the water and sewer lines that are routed on the far left of the photo above.

  • Ditto the location on the other side of the yard seen in the photo above. To my knowledge, there isn't anything I can interfere with over here.

  • The new arrangement should give everyone some more room.

  • I decided to fill the empty spaces with something more appropriate, and headed to Lowe's for a pair of Gold Breeze Miscanthus ornamental grass plants.

  • According to the tags on the plants, Gold Breeze Miscanthus will get to around 4 feet tall. They also are ok for part shade.
