  • After having to move the Windmill palm tree last month, I recently discovered a few other things I needed to move out of the backyard. But before attacking that, I wanted to see how everyone else is doing, starting with the pear and maple trees. Both have done very well this year. I planted the pear tree back in April, and it seems to be happy.

  • I read where removing the old blooms from the rose bush can stimulate new growth and more blooms. I did this recently, and the bush bloomed again.

  • Unfortunately, I haven't encountered the same good luck in the rest of the yard. I planted the Windmill palm tree seen in the photo above in the backyard in March. All seemed to be well until it sharply declined. I was hoping to save it by moving it out front last month, but was unable to do so.

  • Both of the Gold Breeze Miscanthus plants I put at the front steps aren't doing very well either.

  • I believe this is some form of Liriope, which, from what I see online, isn't really a "grass" plant. But it looks like ornamental grass, which is why I refer to it as such.

  • The small azalea I relocated from the other side of the yard is ok, and doesn't looks too bad.

  • Hopefully, this shrub will fill in the existing gap when it grows.

  • It was in place long before me. I don't know if this is what you would call "blooming." But the berries that have appeared on the shrub make it look nice.

  • But then again, I am told that I probably couldn't kill the nandinas if I wanted to. That's ok. I'll take what I can get.

  • Like the grass at the mailbox, I want to call this some form of Liriope, which isn't actually a grass. But it looks like grass, is planted in the yard like grass, and currently serving the same purpose as grass. So that's what I am going to call it.

  • The Japanese Boxwood shrubs have done well since they first arrived last year.

  • Athens has seen a good bit of rain recently. The photo above seems to indicate that I have a bit of a drainage issue here. Some of the mulch I put down around the Japanese Boxwoods has been washed over the walkway.

  • I found the small holly seen in the photo above growing right up against one of the landscape timbers and moved it to this spot last year. It's a slow grower, but it's growing, which is good.

  • The two I planted by the flagstone walkway, however, don't look very happy. Pampas grass likes a lot of sun, which these two may not be getting where they currently are. In an attempt to avoid a repeat of what happened to the Windmill palm tree, today's project involved moving them out front.

  • I don't think I'm going to leave it there. But hopefully, a boost of sunlight will be beneficial until I can figure something out.
